Today at 7pm marks the grand spanking new opening of Lock & Key – a speakeasy themed bar – located in Royal Oak, Michigan. I had the pleasure of enjoying a sneak preview earlier in the week and was quite impressed. Lock & Key joins the growing list of craft cocktail bars popping up all over metro Detroit. The Oakland in Ferndale and Sugar House in Corktown are two of the veterans that rank high on my favorite list.
Lock & Key is located behind the Oxford Inn, marked by a red door with a key. The dimly lit lounge is filled with cozy seating and a fireplace, and the bar was staffed with incredibly knowledgeable and friendly cocktail makers. Upon arrival, we were offered to choose from a selection of craft cocktails made from absinthe, and other liquors, or a pretty nice selection of Kuhnhenn beers. Lock & Key boasts the largest number of Kuhnhenn (Warren, MI) tap handles outside of the Kuhnhenn brewery itself. I opted to try one of the cocktails, “The Bitter Truth,” and then moved onto a Valentine vodka Bloody Mary made with house bloody mary mix that is still being perfected.
While the drinks were tasty, the food was pretty outstanding. We sampled raw oysters with a crazy awesome infused horseradish mix, and garlic aioli deviled eggs, which I must admit I basically licked the plate clean to get every last bit of the filling. The tapas style menu is small but packed full of flavor. I was told that there are some slight adjustments coming to some of the items that will definitely bring me back for seconds. Let’s just say I have a weakness for pork belly.
We left for the evening full and happy. I’ll definitely be returning to Lock and Key, and hope to see you all there! If you have time tonight, make sure to head over for the grand opening! There might not be a password to enter the speakeasy, however passwords are still used for specials.
